New for 2017 New for 2017 New for 2017
Ryanair flights from Stansted and Birmingham to Perpignan resume on 26 March 2017. We are keen to encourage those who come without a car. There are regular trains from Perpignan to Collioure and Port-Vendres and we can help transport luggage to the gite.
Refuge Madeloc is a popular and well established venue for walkers, mountain bikers, cyclists and nature lovers. The house has now been classified by Gites de France as a "Gite Panda" for environmentally friendly gites of special wildlife interest. Most of our visitors are large families or groups who book the whole gite (up to 10 people). Contact us if you have a particular interest, for example, in migrating birds, wild flowers, modern art, scuba diving or other outdoor pursuits.

After three years of renovations, Refuge Madeloc opened in May 2013. The house offers accommodation for groups of up to ten in four bedrooms, with two shower rooms, a large living area and kitchen. We also arrange bedding and towels, and can arrange evening meals on request. The house is available either for bed and breakfast for a few days, or as a weekly let as a self catering gite to families and groups, and we have been inspected and accepted by Gites de France as a Gite de Groupes . Please go to Calendar for details of availability and prices, or contact us direct to discuss your plans.

This building was formerly the Caserne Taillefer, a barrack building built in 1885 to support the gun battery above it. It was built of stone in a sheltered spot nearly 1500 feet (465m)above sea level with superb views of the Mediterranean coast. (Find us on Google Earth for the location. The house is just below the Batterie de Taillefer)

The house is completely off grid, generating its own electricity, with woodburners for heating and recycling waste water ecologically. Access is by a track leading up to terrace carved into the hillside at 460 metres and protected from the prevailing winds. There are seven footpaths which converge at the col nearby, offering varied daywalking to the historic towers at Madeloc and Tour de la Massane, the nature reserve of the Massane, the GR10 long distance path and routes in to Spain and the high Pyrenees, or down to the beaches and historic villages of Collioure, Port Vendres and Banyuls.

The footpaths are well signed and maintained, and provide good walking for those of average fitness and more challenging routes for the experienced. However, this is a mountain environment, and walkers need to be properly equipped. The house and area may not be suitable for some families with very young children.

The house is great for birdwatching, particularly in times of migration, for flowers in March-May and for butterflies. You can watch the sun rise from the sea in the morning, and set behind the Corbières in the evening, walk or hire a mountain bike, or just sit on the terrace and read, listening to the silence! The house has a wide variety of maps, nature guides, games, and other reading. The blog gives you much more detail about the wildlife and a gallery of photos.

Although remote, the house is only an hour's walk from Collioure for an evening out, and a taxi can drop you back to a track only 20 minutes from the house. This track, although not tarmacked, is accessible by car and there is limited parking near the house. If you want to combine a mountain week with a week nearer to the beaches and restaurants you could rent our fisherman's house right on the port in Port Vendres www.ruedusoleil.co.uk or we can help you to find other accommodation in the area.

Refuge Madeloc offers an unforgettable week in an astonishing setting. We are working hard to provide what our visitors need, and will be on hand to make things run smoothly. We are happy to answer your questions and give advice. Feel free to contact us by email and we will see how we can help.
